Safety Management Systems (SMS)

Safety Management Systems (SMS) represent a systematic, explicit and comprehensive process for managing risks to safety.

A successfully developed and implemented Safety Management System will ensure that safety is integrated into all management systems including operational, maintenance, financial and human resource management.

The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) requires all commercial operators worldwide to have an SMS.

SMS is a longstanding feature of business aviation industry best practices.

To that end the International Business Aviation Council (IBAC) in cooperation with its Member Associations, including the EBAA, have developed an SMS Toolkit.

This compilation of guidance materials helps business aviation flight departments implement Safety Management Systems that meet both ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) and the regulatory requirements of aviation regulatory authorities.

Additionally, EBAA frequently offers workshops to assist operators with the application of the toolkit.
