European Business aviation traffic tracker (August 2020)

Using EUROCONTROL data, we have compiled the European Business aviation traffic figures for August 2020.

In this report, you will find detailed information on European Business aviation traffic, in a geographic and weekly breakdown.

The business aviation sector was heavily impacted by the crisis from mid-March onwards, reducing activity by up to 76% around mid-April.  We observed a slight upturn at the end of May, that was confirmed in June and accelerated over the summer, with traffic at 1% below 2019 levels at the same time. Business aviation accounted for 14% of European air traffic in August compared with 6-7% in standard times. Though, the “January to August 2020” period remains across Europe around 28% below compared with the same period in 2019.

Key learnings

  • Business aviation is shaping the air transport recovery and has recovered significantly more than the airlines (at -59% at the end of August) and is now back to normal.
  • While airlines struggle to restart effectively, new customers are willing to pay a bit more for added travel flexibility, peace of mind and security in these unprecedented times.
  • It remains to be seen if this demand will withstand the ongoing COVID-19 crisis and travel restrictions still being put in place by governments across Europe to mitigate its impact.

This traffic report is made possible thanks to EUROCONTROL data and the support of WingX.
